super bowl 56 expected to pass 7.6 billion dollars

A survey commissioned by the American Gaming Association (AGA) has concluded that over $7.6 billion is likely to be spent on Super Bowl 56 bets in the US. This is a huge increase on the $4.28 billion legally wagered on Super Bowl 55. The predicted sharp rise is due to recent changes in gambling laws and the launch of mobile betting apps.

Over 30 Million Americans Will Bet on Bengals vs. Rams Game

Morning Consult’s survey found that 31.4 million American adults will bet on Super Bowl LVI – a 35 percent increase from last year’s edition. The extra interest could see wagers spent on the biggest game in football surpass $7.61 billion – $3.33 billion more than last year (a 78% rise).

“The results are clear: Americans have never been more interested in legal sports wagering,” said Bill Miller, AGA president and CEO.

The Los Angeles Rams are the favorites to win the Championship showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals. The latest Super Bowl odds at NFL sportsbooks have Matthew Stafford’s Rams as 4-point favorites.

More Bookmakers

The continued growth of legal betting channels is being welcomed by bettors, stated Miller. The AGA also believes that the vast authorization of US sports betting has sent a warning message to illegal bookmakers.

“The growth of legal options across the country not only protects fans and the integrity of games and bets but also puts illegal operators on notice that their time is limited,” said Miller.

The Super Bowl survey discovered that 76 percent of US adults think it’s important to use a legal operator to wager on sports. This finding shows an 11 percent increase from a similar survey conducted by Morning Consult for the same game last year.

2022 Super Bowl Study

The recent AGA study also had some other key findings:

  • 18.2 million Americans will place traditional sports wagers online, at a retail sportsbook, or with a bookmaker – an increase of 78 percent from 2021.
  • 18.5 million plan on betting casually with friends or as part of a pool or squares contest, up 23 percent from 2021.
  • 76% stated that it was important to bet through a legal operator, up 11 percent from 2021.
  • 55% of bettors plan to wager on the Los Angeles Rams compared to 45 percent on the Cincinnati Bengals.
