In an unbelievable turn of events, Rodger Federer, the only man to win 5 consecutive titles at the US Open, has stepped out of the 2021 competition due to his third knee surgery in two years.

Having just entered his forties, Switzerland’s most recognised, and arguably most influential athlete, is perhaps starting to show his first signs of weakness.

Federer Announces It Will Be Many Months Before He Returns

Just weeks away from the start of the 2021 US Open, fans are left bitterly disappointed as Roger Federer announces he will not play in this year’s tournament.

40-year-old Federer, who is currently at the top of his career,  has confirmed that he will undergo a 3rd knee operation in an attempt to keep his tennis career alive. Speculation is now growing about his future, especially with the long absence ahead of him plus his age.

Earlier this year Federer got off to a great start at the French Open, but then failed to make the semi-finals at Wimbledon when he reportedly triggered his knee injury at the grasscourt season.

He chose not to attend the Tokyo Olympics due to his knee injury and his withdrawal from the American Open, which means there is real pressure on his ability to beat the record for Grand Slam titles.

Currently, Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are all neck and neck for the men’s record with 20 Grand Slam singles titles each.

Federer is still determined to rejoin the tour sometime in the future, and we wish him well in his recovery.

Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor has taken Federer place at this year’s Open, which is expected to disrupt some of the seeds. With a few more weeks to go, there is still plenty of time for more changes.
