As the top 125 players in the world head into the FedEx playoff with the potential of a $15m cheque, some familiar names will be playing to keep their cards for the tour next year.

The FedEx Cup is the largest prize in golf betting, where someone will walk off with a $15 million prize. If you consider that the very best will make about $5m a year in prize money, it’s easy to see why the FedEx championship brings so much attention.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs

The Playoffs consist of three events, capped off by the Tour Championship. First is the Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club (August 19-22) where the 125 qualifiers will play for a spot in the top 70.

Those golfers will move on to the BMW Championship on August 26-29 at Caves Valley Golf Club where 30 spaces are available for the FedEx Playoffs. The playoff is the only handicap event of the season and gives the top players a distinct advantage. The leader going into the event will start at 10 under.

  • No. 1: 10 under
  • No. 2: 8 under
  • No. 3: 7 under
  • No. 4: 6 under
  • No. 5: 5 under
  • Nos. 6-10: 4 under
  • Nos. 11-15: 3 under
  • Nos. 16-20: 2 under
  • Nos. 21-25: 1 under
  • Nos. 26-30: Even

Prize Pool

The winner will take away a cool $15m and last place $395k so as you can see, the prizes are huge.

  • 1. $15,000,000
  • 2. $5,000,000
  • 3. $4,000,000
  • 4. $3,000,000
  • 5. $2,500,000
  • 6. $1,900,000
  • 7. $1,300,000
  • 8. $1,100,000

Collin Morikawa with his 2,171 total FedEx Cup points finished the season in the No. 1 spot with Jordan Spieth is No. 2 in FedEx points, followed by Patrick Cantlay, Harris English and Jon Rahm.

On the other side of the tour, we are saying goodbye to some familiar names who now head for Korn Ferry Tour Finals where they will have to finish inside the top 25 in the three-tournament event to remain playing on the tour. Fail and it’s all over!

Two leading players heading for the Korn Ferry include :

Tommy Fleetwood (137th)— Europe’s Ryder Cup star and current world 37th ranked player

Jason Dufner (154th) — With just 15 cuts in 29 Jason is looking in trouble.

The end of the season for golf either brings the prospect of a huge win or the prospect of losing your rights to play – The stakes are huge.
