What’s the background to the fight?

This is a trilogy fight between Fury and Wilder, with the pair having met twice previously.

Fight 1 – Their first fight back in December 2018 was full of drama, with Fury dragging himself off the canvas when seemingly down and out in the final round. “The Gypsy King” outboxed “The Bronze Bomber” for much of the fight, but was dropped twice. When the bout went to the judges, they deemed it to be a split draw.

Fight 2 – They last met at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Vegas on February 22, 2020, in a fight that Fury dominated against the previously unbeaten Alabama fighter, dropping him on several occasions, before Wilder’s corner threw in the towel at the end of the 7th round.

It was a change in tactics from the first bout from Fury, switching from a fairly conservative point-scoring strategy to one of taking the fight to Wilder.

Neither boxer has fought since they last faced each other, with Fury’s scheduled bout against Anthony Joshua to decide who would become the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World being put on hold after an arbitrator decided that Fury was legally obligated to fight Wilder for a third time to decide who claims the WBC belt.

Fury v Wilder 3 – Who wins?

Fury is likely to follow a similar plan to the last bout between the pair, in stalking his opponent to try to close the space and get in Wilder’s face.

The more that Fury can suffocate Wilder and drain the energy from the American in the clinches with his extra weight and height, the more likely he is to wear down his opponent to set him up for the KO.

It’s certainly not a tactic without risk though, as if he gives Wilder the opportunity to connect with his right hand, it could be lights out for Fury. There’s also the question as the psychological damage that Fury did to Wilder in thrashing him in their last fight. Has he truly recovered from that?

Wilder also has a new untested trainer in Malik Scott (with whom Fury previously sparred) and, rather than a gym, has been training at home. There will be questions asked on both counts.

Although the bigger fighter, Fury has greater athleticism than Wilder and it’s widely agreed he is the better protagonist in terms of boxing skills and ring craft.
