The 37-year-old Brunson from Wilmington, North Carolina was last in action back in March, when he beat Kevin “Trailblazer” Holland via unanimous decision in Las Vegas. That victory saw the veteran American extend his winning streak to four fights, three of which have been won by decision.
Of Brunson’s 22 career wins, 11 have come via knockout, four by submission and the other seven by decision. Brunson’s seven losses have seen him beaten by KO on five occasions and gone down on the judges’ scorecards twice.
Till, the former UFC welterweight championship challenger, returns to the Octagon for the first time since his unanimous decision defeat to Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker in Abu Dhabi in July 2020. Despite the loss. Till was widely praised for his performance against Whittaker.
That was a third loss in his last four fights for “The Gorilla”, who knows that victory over Brunson could put him back in contention for a future middleweight title shot against the current champion, Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya.
Before the loss to Whittaker, he defeated Kelvin Gastelum via a split decision after moving back to the middleweight division, but suffered second round losses to Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal and Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley prior to that, the latter in a welterweight title fight.
The 28-year-old English fighter from Liverpool was scheduled for main event fights against Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori since his defeat to Whittaker, but was forced to pull out of both bouts with injuries.
Of Till’s 18 wins, 10 have come via KO, two by submission, with the remaining six victories being by decision.
Will Brunson v Till go the distance?
Darren Till is the younger man and looks to have the edge as the more skilled striker and in being a fighter who is hard to take down.
Brunson is the more active of the two fighters with his strikes, with 3.46 significant strikes per minute compared to 2.27 from Till.
Overall, the English fighter might just have the extra class required to win this bout, although there looks to be every possibility that the outcome could come down to the judges’ scorecards.
