Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev will play in the men’s singles final of the United States Tennis Open on Sunday. They last met at the ATP Tournament Australian Open Men’s Final played on Hard Court on 02/21/21 with Novak emerging as the winner in 3 straight sets. A performance of almost perfect competence saw Novak Djokovic take Daniil Medvedev apart to win his eighth Australian Open. Now on Sunday, Novak will go for his 21st Major Title…The Grand Slam and Daniil will be looking for his 1st Grand Slam win.

On paper, Novak looks like the man to beat as he has spent a record 336 weeks as the World No. 1. Plus he has the head-to-head edge over the Russian, winning 5-of-8 matches overall and 4-of-6 on hard courts. But an upset is possible and one key reason for this is that Daniil, seeded No 2, could be the far fresher in terms of sets played and time on court at this US Open.

Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev will face off in the U.S. Open Men’s Singles Final on Sunday 9/12/2021 at 4 p.m. ET from Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.

Novak Djokovic

Novak beat Alexander Zverev, seeded No 4 in 5 sets 4-6,6-2,6-4,4-6,6-2. Prior to his semi final, Djokovic had dropped one set in four of his five matches so far. In the last three matches, he dropped the first set before taking over. Yet, he has rarely ever looked in trouble. This is his 31st Grand Slam final, 9th US Open final and he is 27-0 at Grand Slams in 2021.
Novak is now competing for the calendar slam and his 21st career major title. He is trying to accomplish something which hasn’t been achieved by any man since Rod Laver in 1969: the Calendar Grand Slam (winning all four Grand Slams in one calendar year). In addition, he is trying to win a men’s record 21st Grand Slam singles title. With that motivation, is he good enough to overcome his opponent?
” There’s only one match left. All in. Let’s do it. I’m going to put my heart and my soul and my body into that one. I’m going to treat the next match like it is the last match of my career.”

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil beat Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded 12 in 3 straight sets 6-4, 7-5,6-2 to set up this final. He has been in two US finals in the last three years and is the first Russian man to reach multiple US open singles finals.
Despite now being ranked at a career high, 2nd in the world, Daniil is yet to break through and win his first Grand Slam title, always seemingly in the shadow of the big three; Djokovic, Nadal and Federer.
But Daniil has been a true machine in this year’s US hardcourt season and only one man has taken a set off him at this year’s US Open tournament, Botic van de Zanschulp.
And in the last four Grand Slam events played on hard courts, he has lost to the eventual champion on three occasions. He has all the weapons to beat everyone on tour, but his mental game which is often so impressive must be in peak performance mode.

Will the pressure of the occasion be too much for Novak just like it was at the Olympics? And if Daniil is to win, will he remain solid inside his head in the toughest moments?
The top two men’s tennis players in the world with history on the line. It doesn’t really get any better than this!
