Who Won 2023 American League MVP?

Shohei Ohtani (Angels) won 2023 AL MVP: for the second time in his career, and with unanimous votes.

Last season Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees became the AL 2022 MVP after a historic 62 home-run HR year. Judge received 28 of 30 1st place votes – claiming the MVP over 2021 MVP Shohei Ohtani of the Angels.

Who Decides the MLB AL MVP Winner?

Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America cast votes to decide the MVP winner for both leagues (National League and American League). The association consists of baseball journalists for daily newspapers, magazines, and qualifying websites.

Top statistical accomplishments are the biggest determining factor. However, many voters also cast their vote by deciding which players have been the “most valuable” to their teams.

Two members from each MLB city are put forth by their local chapter chairman before the national secretary-treasurer grants them membership.

Journalists can only vote for players that belong to the league in which their city’s team plays. MVP ballots have 10 spots that must be cast before the postseason. Votes are counted using a point system based on which spot a player occupies on a ballot.

A first-place vote is 14 points. The following spots descend in value from nine points to one.

Top statistical accomplishments are the biggest determining factor. However, many voters also cast their vote by deciding which players have been the “most valuable” to their teams.

Additionally, local biases and a player’s public image can also play a role – so keep this in mind before betting on the MLB MVP award.
