AL MVP: The Preseason Favorites

Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Angels)

Last season, Ohtani pitched 130 innings with a 9-2 record and 3.18 ERA and hit 46 homers over 158 games – an unbelievable feat in the modern game. Therefore, it was unsurprising to see Ohtani win the AL MVP in 2021, despite the Angels having an average season.

Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels)

Although the three-time AL MVP winner (2014, 2016, and 2019) missed most of last season and struggled to find his form because of a calf injury, he looks fully recovered. Many consider Trout the best player in the world. Therefore, if he stays healthy, he could mount an impressive comeback story and get his hands on the MVP award for the fourth time this year.

Vlad Guerrero Jr (Toronto Blue Jays)

Had Ohtani not put up such shocking numbers last year, Guerrero Jr would have likely won MVP last season. The slugger hit .311 with a 1.002 OPS and 48 HRs last season. As the Dominican–Canadian is only 22, expect him to do even better this year.

Who Decides the MLB AL MVP Winner?

Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America cast votes to decide the MVP winner for both leagues (National League and American League). The association consists of baseball journalists for daily newspapers, magazines, and qualifying websites.

Top statistical accomplishments are the biggest determining factor. However, many voters also cast their vote by deciding which players have been the “most valuable” to their teams.

Two members from each MLB city are put forth by their local chapter chairman before the national secretary-treasurer grants them membership.

Journalists can only vote for players that belong to the league in which their city’s team plays. MVP ballots have 10 spots that must be cast before the postseason. Votes are counted using a point system based on which spot a player occupies on a ballot.

A first-place vote is 14 points. The following spots descend in value from nine points to one.

Additionally, local biases and a player’s public image can also play a role – so keep this in mind before betting on the MLB MVP award.
