The American League East, or AL East as it’s commonly referred to, is one of the six divisions that make up the Major League Baseball (MLB). The division began its inaugural season in 1969, alongside the West division. The majority of the teams in the division are on the east coast of the United States, with the only exception being the Toronto Blue Jays, who play out on the east coast of Canada. The most successful team in this division is the New York Yankees, who have come out on top 19 times.

Despite having an up-and-down off-season and losing both Robbie Ray and Marcus Semien in free agency, the favorites are Toronto. The Jays picked up Kevin Gausman and Matt Chapman (third baseman) on the upside. The Blue Jays haven’t won since 2015, but this is their best chance in recent years, with a stacked roster including the likes of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and George Springer.

The Yankees didn’t make too many free agency trades or mores, but they did manage to bag Josh Donaldson from the Minnesota Twins and acquired Isiah Kiner-Falefa (shortstop). Other moves included losing Gary Sanchez and Grio Urshela, but as a whole, their team is very similar to last season – ready to play some long ball.
Previous Winners of the American League East
Easily the most successful team in the east are the New York Yankees, who have won 19 Divisional titles. They dominated from 1998 to 2006, winning the division every year and winning three World Series titles.
More recently, though, we have seen all of the teams in the division have their moment of glory, and the Tampa Bay Rays went back-to-back in 2020 and 2021 but will enter as third favorites this season after some changes.
