angels salaries

The Los Angeles Angels invested about $187 million in assembling their team for 2022. This sum was around $190 million in 2021. The Angels’ payroll has been fluctuating between $175 and $190 million for a number of seasons, and they haven’t advanced farther than the regular season since 2014.

According to Perry Minasian and the Angels organization, they will take the necessary steps to strengthen the roster before 2023. However, Minasian may find it challenging to spend more than what has become customary in Anaheim given a potential ownership transaction and uncertainty surrounding Shohei Ohtani’s future with the team.

It was crucial to secure an early agreement from Ohtani in order to prevent his last year of arbitration because of this. A $30 million, one-year agreement was reached by the two parties. For Los Angeles, it’s a bargain.

Before they start making calculations on significant free agents and trades, the A’s still need to sort out seven players who are arbitration eligible and a ton of players who are pre-arbitration.

Here, we’ll examine the Angels’ projected salary through 2023 and how it positions them for the upcoming hot stove season.

Angels Guaranteed Salaries

Only seven salaries are officially scheduled for payment by the Angels in 2023. But even with just these seven, the total is substantial.

  • 3B Anthony Rendon – $38,571,428
  • CF Mike Trout – $37,116,666
  • SP/DH Shohei Ohtani – $30,000,000
  • RP Aaron Loup – $7,500,000
  • RP Ryan Tepera – $7,000,000
  • C Max Stassi – $7,000,000
  • 2B David Fletcher – $6,000,000

Total:$133,188,094

The Angels have already paid out over $130 million in salary with only seven of the 26 roster positions filled. Six of these seven MLB players are coming off of seasons that were either disappointingly less productive than normal (Max Stassi, Aaron Loup, and Ryan Tepera), injury-filled (legend Mike Trout), or both (Rendon and Fletcher).

Angels Arbitration-eligible players

The following players will either reach a settlement with the Angels or have the opportunity to defend their pay in a hearing if they are eligible for arbitration in 2023. The player’s name will be followed by their 2022 salary and year of arbitration.

  • RP Jaime Barria – $730,000 (Arb 1)
  • SP Griffin Canning – $730,000 (Arb 2)
  • 1B Jared Walsh – $730,000 (Arb 1)
  • SP Patrick Sandoval – $720,000 (Arb 1)
  • RF Taylor Ward – $720,000 (Arb 1)
  • SS Luis Rengifo – $576,900 (Arb 1)
  • RP Zack Weiss – $130,764 (Arb 3)

Luis Rengifo, Sandoval, and Ward are all eligible for significant pay increases in the year 2023. All three are coming off of career years in which they established themselves as cornerstones of the Angels’ long-term success. Especially Sandoval, who has established himself as possibly the best starting pitcher for the Angels, second only to Ohtani.

It is difficult to provide an accurate estimate of the overall compensation that these seven players will earn, although it can be assumed that at least five of them will receive rises.

Players in the Pre-Arbitration Stage

The following players have not yet reached the age requirement to be eligible for arbitration, which means that the Angels can assign a contract value for them without having much room for negotiation. The players will be mentioned without their wages; nonetheless, their impact on the payroll for 2023 will be calculated at an average rate of approximately $700,000 per player.

  • OF Jo Adell
  • RP Jimmy Herget
  • OF Mickey Moniak
  • SP Tucker Davidson
  • SP Reid Detmers
  • C Logan O’Hoppe
  • SS Andrew Velazquez
  • RP Andrew Wantz
  • RP Jose Quijada
  • RP Chris Rodriguez
  • SP Jose Suarez
  • C Matt Thaiss
  • RP Rob Zastryzny

It is reasonable to assume that at least $145 million dollars’ worth of salaries have already been booked for 2023 based for the Angels, based on the information available at this time.
