Popular MLB Bets

Once you have created your new betting account you can place a wide range of different bets on MLB games and futures. In order to shop around and get the best odds and variety of bets and props, you may want to sign up for a few different betting sites at once.

What kinds of bets are popular in the MLB world today? We detail some of the most popular wagers made on baseball right now.

MLB Moneyline Bets

This is the most common type of bet made on baseball games, it’s simply who will win between two teams. The team with a negative score is the favorite and the odds will pay out less than a team with a positive number.

MLB Betting Odds Example:
Date/Time Team Spread Win Total
3/3/22 @ 20:00 New York Yankees -1.5 (-110) -130 O 8.5 (-110)
Tampa Bay Rays +1.5 (-110) +110 U 8.5 (-110)

So the moneyline between the Yankees and the Rays is pretty close, however, the Yankees are a slight favorite so you would have to wager $130 to win a total of $230 on them winning the game ($100 profit). The underdogs in this instance could land you with a $210 win with just a $100 wager, giving you a $110 profit.

To make this kind of bet in the sportsbooks simply click the odds of the team you want to bet on, the bet will then be placed into your betting slip. You can then select how much you would like to bet, so for instance you don’t have to bet $100, you could bet say $10 on the Rays to look to lock up $21. You’ll then need to confirm your bet for it to be placed.

MLB Totals Bets

You can also place bets on what the combined total score of the game will be, similar odds are usually available on either side as the sports betting sites will try and choose exactly where they think the line will be. So with the match-up between the Yankees and the Rays, the line might be set at over/under 8.5. So if the game ended with 9 points scored in total (5-4), you would have had to choose over 8.5 (O 8.5) to win the bet.

MLB Run Line Bets

In other sports, this kind of bet is typically referred to as the spread, but in baseball terms, they have named it the Runline. It’s essentially the same thing as a spread, with the sportsbooks offering differing odds in order to allow you to bet on the favorites with better odds and giving you a better chance of winning by betting on the underdog.

MLB Betting Odds Example:
Date/Time Team Spread Win Total
3/3/22 @ 20:00 New York Yankees -1.5 (-110) -130 O 8.5 (-110)
Tampa Bay Rays +1.5 (-110) +110 U 8.5 (-110)

A negative value in our example of -1.5, means the Yankees are favored to score 1.5 runs more than the Rays. So You can bet on them at increased odds compared to the moneyline, but then they must win by at least 2 more runs.

A positive value, displayed in this case with the Rays at +1.5 means that you can bet on this team with slightly worse odds than the moneyline, but they will have a 1.5 run lead from the beginning of the game, so in the case of a marginal loss, you can still win your bet.

Let’s look at this in a little more detail: We place $110 on the Runline odds of -110 for the Rays against the Yankees, the final score is 5-4 to the Yankees, but because we bet on the Runline, we have a 1.5 point buffer. This means the score as we look at it is Yankees 5, Rays 5.5, meaning we win the bet and cash in a total of $210 for $100 profit.

MLB Prop Bets

Prop bets or proposition bets are bets that are made regarding the occurrence or non-occurrence of a particular event in a game that doesn’t determine the game’s outcome. For instance, who will be the first player to strike out?

There are a few different kinds of props when placing bets on MLB, they can be divided up into two categories, player props, and team props, let’s take a look at some of the examples:

Team props

  • Which team will score first?
  • Will there be a run scored in a particular inning?
  • The total amount of errors in the game?
  • Total hits/runs in the game?
  • The first team to score 3 runs or more?
  • How many home runs will be hit in the game between both teams combined?

Player props

  • Total hits
  • Total runs
  • RBI’s
  • How many strikeouts (over/under)
  • Will player X score a home run?
  • Most strikeouts (player vs. player bet)

MLB Parlays

A parlay is a combination of outcomes that are bet on in a single wager, all must come true in the game/games in order for your bet to payout. So for instance you could bet on the Rays to beat the Yankees and for the Rays to be first to score 3 runs. Or maybe you’ll want to bet on multiple different games in one parlay, so for instance, the Yankees to beat the Rays and the Braves to beat the Red Sox.

If you pick correctly and your outcomes are right, your bet will payout with some increased odds compared to betting them separately. The more predictions you make in a single parlay, the better odds you’ll get.
