Players Championship Golf Odds
The 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass Golf Course

The PGA Tour Players Championship tees off at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach (southwest of Jacksonville) in Florida on Thursday, March 11.

The Sawgrass course is one of the most renowned in the world, with the par 3 island green on the 17th being one of the most recognized holes in the game. It’s a course that doesn’t favor any particular style of golf, whether long or short off the tee, but solid approach play and previous experience at Sawgrass tends to be advantageous.

$15m Prize Fund

The Players Championship currently offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf at $15 million, with the winner picking up $2.7 million, so always attracts the game’s best players. Although not a major it has long been considered as the ‘fifth major’ and the PGA Tour’s crown jewel with 48 of the top 50 players taking part.

Last year’s tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic after the first round, which means 2019 champion Rory McIlroy comes into this year’s Players Championship as the defending champion.

Who are the leading contenders?

The favorites for the tournament include the 2020 Masters Champion and No. 1 player in the world, Dustin Johnson, and the 2020 US Open champion and last week’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge winner Bryson DeChambeau. It would be foolish to rule out either player, but there could be better value odds elsewhere.

Justin Thomas is a golfer with strong approach player and decent experience in the tournament with a best-place finish of third

On his Player Championship debut last year, Collin Morikawa shot 4 under before the tournament was abandoned and the quality of his approach play seems well-suited to the course.

Jordan Spieth is a three-time major champion, but has not won a tournament since claiming the 2017 Open Championship. However, he’s already had three top-five finishes in 2021 and would appear to be getting back to his best.

Paul Casey is another who could be a good value wager at big odds, having had some excellent form in recent tournaments. His best performance at the Players Championship is only a 10th place finish in 11 attempts, but that experience could prove crucial. The Englishman has also had success on other occasions in Florida and on Pete Dye-designed courses.

The course at TPC Sawgrass is fraught with dangers and there hasn’t been a back-to-back winner here since 1982. Last year’s event was cancelled but the winner in 2019 was Rory McIlroy.
